Submission of samples to diagnostic laboratories

When you send diagnostic samples to laboratories, e.g. for Brucella investigations, you must comply with the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations and assign the correct United Nations (UN) number.

The current conditions (ADR 2011), giving further guidance on UN classification (Part 2) and packing instructions (Part 4) may be found at this link: http://www.unece.org/trans/danger/publi/adr/adr2011/11contentse.html

The samples which Official Veterinarians collect on behalf of Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA) are classified under ADR Regulations as UN3373 BIOLOGICAL SUBSTANCE CATEGORY B (refer to ADR part 2 clause 2.2.62) and must be packed according to P650 packing instruction (refer to ADR part 4 pages 146 and 147).

Official Veterinarians must follow these instructions for the collection, preparation and dispatch of samples.

A Quick Reference Guide to ADR for OVs is available and you should also refer to the website.
