Case studies

APHA has extensive experience of monitoring birds using both conventional ornithology and radar-based techniques. Below are examples of our project work in the renewable energy sector.

Pairc wind farm (Scottish and Southern Energy)

Analysis and evaluation of previously gathered field data combined with a complex collision risk analysis for a number of different species of international conservation concern and species specific Population Viability Assessment Modelling. Full EIA report production and cumulative assessment for key species within the Western Isles Natural Heritage Zone.

Aberdeen wind farm (AMEC)

Conducting specialist fieldwork using bird radar and seabird census techniques to monitor bird movements offshore. Radar work was conducted over two multiple week periods in 2005 and 2007 targeting spring and autumn migration.

Tween Bridge nightjars (E.On)

APHA’s bird detection radar system was used to evaluate the nocturnal movements of nightjars for a wind farm development adjacent to the Thorne Moors SPA near Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Radar analysis allowed the tracks of birds to be studied at night and an evaluation of their movements was successfully presented at public enquiry.

Lynn and Inner Dowsing (Centrica)

APHA’s bird detection radar was commissioned to undertake a six-week monitoring exercise to assess migrant pink-footed goose activity in the vicinity of a partially completed offshore wind farm. Detailed and continuous species-specific migration data was recorded over an area covering tens of square kilometres and provided robust data sets for daytime and nocturnal migration.

Wave power installation (Wave Dragon Wales Ltd.)

Ornithological assessment for the EIA of wave power installation. We undertook a desk-based analysis of the likely impacts of this new wave energy system on local bird populations. The new techniques developed by APHA to deliver this project are highly transferable to other wave energy projects.
