Pasteurella multocida toxin detection
Microbiological culture / ELISA or PCR
ELISA tests detect the presence of the Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT).
PCR tests detect the presence of toxA, the gene encoding the PMT.
A theoretical potential exists for a sample to be PCR positive but ELISA negative. In this situation the toxA gene is present but is not expressed. The frequency at which such results are obtained is currently unknown.
